I am a fitness enthusiast – and have been for a good 10 years, since high school. I am not OCD about it…and I don’t let my life revolve around it (at least for the most part). I do however enjoy trying just about any form of exercise, as long as it keeps me engaged, and is a fun, efficient expenditure of energy. Over the years, my habits have evolved…and I can’t justify workouts that last two hours and achieve very little (low intensity) or running on a straight track or sidewalk for miles…it just gets boring and stale.
What’s not boring and stale is the spin class I’ve been attending over the last month. At a studio that is exclusively cycling (Soho Spin)…the class is taught by a local trainer (Dave Norrie) who takes the art of spinning to a different level of fun and playfulness. He’s a serious instructor but always has bizarre and somehow totally convincing pairings of music and video. Today was a bunch of old-new, rap-indie mashups played along with an hour video of agriculture, farming, natural landscapes, and wildlife…a la Nat Geo. Brilliant!!
I highly recommend trying Dave’s class at Soho Spin if you can manage it. You have to reserve online (and buy “class tickets” first), and it gets filled up fast (opens 24 hours prior). I want to try some other classes and other instructors…and I will report on those in time, too.
