As Apple unveiled its latest iPhone iteration, millions of thirsty Apple-holics simultaneously booed what Tim Cook brought to the party: an updated but not fully revamped version of the year-old iPhone 4…aptly called the 4S. It’s faster, smarter, better…and aren’t all F, S, B versions of products given an “S” for “sporty” or “sexy”? The new and improved features a number of upgrades, including dual processors and a “voice-activated personal assistant” called Siri. Supposedly, she will be able to make changes to your calendar, find information online, read aloud text messages, and type return messages…all at your verbal directive. Pretty cool, if it works as they say…
In any case, since I’ve had my ancient iPhone 3G for just over three years, I decided to order the new phone, despite it being the same shape and feel as the current version (it looks so 2010!). The silver lining to my disappointment on the ‘old’ shape is that there are more choices for 4S cases than I can imagine, all ready to order and implement!
Now, I never had a case on my 3G (or anything else aftermarket)…but it, in my opinion, is a sturdier, less delicate construction compared to the 4. Has a plastic backing, and a thick polished silver edging around the glass screen. I’ve dropped it plenty of times and never cracked the screen. With this new one, I’m not so confident. I want to protect it, but I don’t want to ruin its sleek, slim, squared-off modern look. Most covers I’ve seen are bulky, rubber (?!), or just unappealing to look at and touch.
So far, I’ve found several I like. Range of prices.
Valextra iPhone case, Verde Prato, $290
Valextra iPhone sleeve, Aragosta, $170
Solid Brass iPhone case by EXOVault, $95 (on Etsy)
Cote et Ciel microfiber iPhone case with credit card slot, $39
Thoughts?

Heeenneeyyy you no want a credit card slot on you phoneee!
Now next time he’s on vacation in Chicago that means he’d lose BOTH his iPhone & wallet. IDK about crazy expensive cases and know how you dislike InCase but still want the ‘birds nest’ cover in red…to SOON match my black/red nano/watch combo:) http://storeimages.apple.com/2012/as-images.apple.com/is/image/AppleInc/H6667?wid=326&hei=326&fmt=jpeg&qlt=95&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.5,0.5,0,0&iccEmbed=0&layer=comp
The brass one, definitely. Sturdier, sleeker, more original and less expensive than the Valextra goods (though I like the sleeve).
I’m also not a fan of sleeves or cases with flaps, but then I’m a phone-in-the-pocket kinda guy so I don’t really need the extra screen protection.
I like the birds-nest cover – it is very you, Paul.
Chris – I am too although I’ve been trying to carry my phone and wallet separate, in-hand. I just don’t like having bulky pockets, even if the items are slim. A nice case that protects and also discourages me from checking my phone every 10 seconds might be nice…
The bird’s nest cover is pretty great, but I still like the brass one the best.
I went with the black microfiber Cote et Ciel case. Will update when I have it in-hand.
