I haven’t quite decided if this is just another genre of expensive things that I enjoy exploring or if I actually will develop a taste for them in the long run…but I’ve been getting very into candles lately.
The story is: I bought one candle online, on sale, for a friend for Christmas. Naturally, it arrived and it smelled so good I couldn’t control myself, so I unwrapped it and fired it up. A week later, it is 1/3 gone and still smelling as lovely as the first time I lit it. The candle is a Dayna Decker botanika Bardou 6oz ‘chandel’ with a very interesting ‘eco-wick.’ According to the Dayna Decker website, the eco-wick is a wood wick (looks a bit like balsa wood) that burns cleaner than a regular cotton wick, emits an elegant teardrop-shaped flame and crackles softly. Further, the candle is in a lovely, heavy (!!) dark green glass container. When was the last time you bought a candle that wasn’t in a metal tin?
Now, normally I would feel silly spending $50+ on a candle. In this case, it was on sale, so it was more like $25, which is less cause for concern. However, since using it and experiencing it, I can say that the details and the thought that went into the candle seem to give it more legitimacy. The flame is attractive and the sound is quite pleasant. And the smell has reached every room in my house, even though the candle stays in the bathroom (could be a good or bad thing depending on the situation), which certainly can’t be said for all home fragrance devices.
Since using this candle, I’ve purchased several more candles online as gifts (although no other Dayna Decker ones). I’ll have to get comments from my friends and family after they have recieved (and used) their candle gifts this Christmas to see if they feel more luxurious than your typical tealight from Target.
